Goldilocks as a Cowboy

Do you remember the story of Goldilocks?  She was the young blonde gal that broke into the bears home and tried out their beds and ate their food.  I bring up this story because Goldilocks went into the house and tried all the beds until she found the one that was just right.  She tried all the food until she found the one that was just right.

In picking colleges, I have noticed that kids have a funny way of deciding what makes a school just right.  A lot of our students are picking schools based on word of mouth or on rankings that they have found on the internet.  Did you know that for a lot of those rankings (like the US News and World Report) the ranking is largely determined by how difficult it is to get in.  Ever heard of Harvard?  They accept 6% of the kids that apply.  That means they reject 94% of the kids that sent in their $75 dollar non refundable application fee will be disappointed.  Approximately 35,000 kids apply to Harvard.  That means the school makes about 2.6 MILLION dollars, just on kids hoping to get in.  Most Ivy Leagues have the same story to tell.

What about schools closer to home?  UCLA accepts about 22% of the students that apply.  Last year 80,000 kids applied to UCLA.  That's 4 MILLION dollars the school received just because kids want to go there.

I tell you this because I want you to understand that colleges are a business.  They make money by making you want to attend, and apply, to their school.  After you take the PSAT, schools are going to start sending you emails, brochures, and cool stuff.  How do you decide which school is best for you?  Which college is going to be just right?

Deciding which college, university, or program to attend after graduation is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your lifetime.  Such a big decision deserves a lot of time and research on your part.  That may seem a little overwhelming, but that's why you have counselors here at Canyon.  Our job is to help you navigate all the information and find the perfect spot for you.

Reading this blog is a great start to your journey.  Visiting with your counselor and letting them know you better is a next great step.  Attending our workshops will help give you tools to make the decision process easy.

If you are thinking to yourself, "I have no idea what I want to do after graduation" then let your Canyon Counselors help.

On March 26th, the late start Wednesday, at 8 am in the Q-theater, we are having a workshop titled, "The Pathway to Success Breakfast".  We will teach you how to start picking the school that is perfect for you.  Plus, we'll feed you something yummy!  We'll make it fun and simple to start your journey.  Please come!!

Movie Listings for 3/14

HERE are the movie listings for this weekend.

I saw  the movie "Non-Stop" last weekend.  It is a great action/mystery movie.  It's about a police officer who becomes an air marshall.  In registering juniors, I learned that a lot of you are interested in Criminal Justice or criminology.  Did you know that UC Irvine offers a major in criminology?  You can learn more about it here

Did you know our local community college, COC,  offers courses in criminology as well?  They have classes that sound really interesting, like "Introduction to Law Enforcement", "Criminal Investigation", and "Organized Crime and Vice."  After your sophomore year you can take classes at COC.  If you are interested in becoming a police officer, special agent, or super spy, taking some classes in high school is a great first start!

If you have questions about how to sign up for a COC class, or want to learn more about criminology, please visit your Canyon Counselor.

Community Service Opportunity

Students:  One of the most important things you can do to help get into college and qualify for scholarships is participating in community service.  There are many opportunities to serve and help in Santa Clarita.  Today I want to tell you about Help The Children in Santa Clarita.  Help the Children feeds over 5000 families in Santa Clarita.  They give food weekly to families, veterans, and the elderly.  People do not have to prove they make below a particular income in order to get help.  So if you know of someone that doesn’t have enough food, PLEASE tell them about Help The Children.

You can help in many ways.  One of the ways is through Help the Harvest.  Do you have a backyard with fruit trees?  Would you be willing to donate some of the fruit from the trees?  Help the Children will come to your house and pick the fruit to give to families in need in Santa Clarita.

During the summer, Help the Children would really appreciate volunteers to help them pick and deliver the fruit.  This would be a great community service opportunity for you.
Help the Children also has a facility in the Industrial Center.  Every week families go to pick up food, and Help the Children would love it if you or your club, or your family could come and volunteer a few hours any time in the year.

Help the Children has many different opportunities to serve throughout the year.  At the beginning of the school year, they collect school items to help children.  At Thanksgiving, they collect the goods for Thanksgiving meals and at Christmas, time you have the opportunity to adopt a family and help provide a Christmas meal and presents.

Help the Children is located at 25030 Avenue Tibbits, Suite L in Valencia.  Their phone number is 661-702-8852.  If you have any questions, please stop by and talk to Mrs. Goller in the counseling office.

Friday's Movie Listings

HERE are the movie listings for this weekend.

Frozen is still playing.  I am addicted to that song "Let it Go".  If you are in the theater and hear someone belting out "Let it Go!!!!!" it just might be me.  If it is completely off key and sounds a little like goldfish are trying to escape the singer's throat......it is definitely me!!

Speaking of animation....the first person to come to Mrs. Goller's office with the name of a school that has animation as a major will receive a prize.
