COC Sports Medicine Open House

One of the most popular career choices for Canyon Cowboys is "something" in the medical field.  Many of you aren't sure exactly what you want to do, but you know it will have something to do with anatomy.

COC is having an Open House to show off their Sports Medicine Program.  They will show you the facilities, let you meet the instructors and current students, and share all about what a career in Sports Medicine would be like.

This is a great opportunity for those of you that are thinking of doing "something"!  The Open House will be on Wednesday, April 30th from 3:00-7:00 pm.  Stop by anytime in that time period.  The Open House will be at the Athletic Training Clinic (across from the tennis courts).  If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Ehrsam at 661-362-3377 or sarah.ehrsam@canyons.edu.

Planning Ahead

We have a lot of students asking about dates in the future, like "What is the last day of school?" or "When does school start next year?"  Did you know that there is a district calendar that has all the important dates for this year, and next year?  HERE is the link.  Click on the school year calendar of your choice.

Just to help you, here are some of the important dates that are coming up:

April 28th:  Lunch time meeting in G- 228 for students attending the College Fair Fieldtrip

May 1st: College Fair Fieldtrip (there are only a couple of seats left!)

June 6th:  Last Day of School

July 1st:  The first day of summer school.  (Unless you are attending the special education summer program at Valencia.  Then your first day is June 30th).

When we come back for the beginning of the school year, here are some important dates:

August 4th: Senior Registration
August 5th: Junior Registration
August 6th: Sophomore Registration
August 7th: Freshman Registration
August 8th: Make-up Registration

The first day of school will be August 14th.

You will hear more of this from us later, but you should make every attempt to attend Registration.  It is the only time you can sit down with your counselor once your schedule is done and work out any issues.  After registration you have to fill out the change request forms and you don't get the opportunity to talk with your counselor one on one.  If at all possible, please plan your vacations in such a way that you can attend registration.

Summer School Forms

The Summer School Forms are now available.

If you are planning on going to summer school at Golden Valley (sorry, it won't be at Canyon this year) you can follow THIS link to print out the forms.

If you are planning on attending Opportunities for Learning (OFL) then you need to pick up the forms from your counselor.  Once you have the form, you have to go online and preregister.  You can preregister HERE.
After you preregister, you must take the form your counselor gave you into OFL.  They are located in the Albertson's parking lot, next to Mighty Mouth.

All of summer school is based on a first come, first served basis.  Don't procrastinate.  Get your paperwork in as soon as possible!

If you need any help, please stop by the Counseling Office.  We would love to help you.

Goldilocks as a Cowboy

Do you remember the story of Goldilocks?  She was the young blonde gal that broke into the bears home and tried out their beds and ate their food.  I bring up this story because Goldilocks went into the house and tried all the beds until she found the one that was just right.  She tried all the food until she found the one that was just right.

In picking colleges, I have noticed that kids have a funny way of deciding what makes a school just right.  A lot of our students are picking schools based on word of mouth or on rankings that they have found on the internet.  Did you know that for a lot of those rankings (like the US News and World Report) the ranking is largely determined by how difficult it is to get in.  Ever heard of Harvard?  They accept 6% of the kids that apply.  That means they reject 94% of the kids that sent in their $75 dollar non refundable application fee will be disappointed.  Approximately 35,000 kids apply to Harvard.  That means the school makes about 2.6 MILLION dollars, just on kids hoping to get in.  Most Ivy Leagues have the same story to tell.

What about schools closer to home?  UCLA accepts about 22% of the students that apply.  Last year 80,000 kids applied to UCLA.  That's 4 MILLION dollars the school received just because kids want to go there.

I tell you this because I want you to understand that colleges are a business.  They make money by making you want to attend, and apply, to their school.  After you take the PSAT, schools are going to start sending you emails, brochures, and cool stuff.  How do you decide which school is best for you?  Which college is going to be just right?

Deciding which college, university, or program to attend after graduation is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your lifetime.  Such a big decision deserves a lot of time and research on your part.  That may seem a little overwhelming, but that's why you have counselors here at Canyon.  Our job is to help you navigate all the information and find the perfect spot for you.

Reading this blog is a great start to your journey.  Visiting with your counselor and letting them know you better is a next great step.  Attending our workshops will help give you tools to make the decision process easy.

If you are thinking to yourself, "I have no idea what I want to do after graduation" then let your Canyon Counselors help.

On March 26th, the late start Wednesday, at 8 am in the Q-theater, we are having a workshop titled, "The Pathway to Success Breakfast".  We will teach you how to start picking the school that is perfect for you.  Plus, we'll feed you something yummy!  We'll make it fun and simple to start your journey.  Please come!!
